Kaleb Erdmann: Die Ausweichschule - Reading and discussion with Christin Schäfer
In 2002, shots were fired at the Gutenberg High School in Erfurt. More than twenty years later, the event unexpectedly bursts into the life of an unnamed narrator, who experienced the shooting rampage himself as an eleven-year-old. The subsequent incessant preoccupation with the subject prompted him to write. But how can he talk about what can hardly be said? Does he have the right to do so? Personal memories are juxtaposed with official reports and, in the end, the question remains as to which fragments of his own childhood self the narrator can trust.
After his highly acclaimed debut "wir sind pioniere", Kaleb Erdmann ventures on a "journey into his own inner self" (DLF) in his new autofictional novel (park x ullstein, 2025). The author carefully and impressively spins a story that constantly reflects on itself and explores the possibility of literature as a way of dealing with trauma. Erdmann talks to Christin Schäfer (Literaturhaus) about writing as organizing.
